UM News Silver Show December 10, 2015
This week on UM News, reporter Sarah Yovetich and photographer Peter Riley learned about the new student-led letter writing campaign protesting proposed cuts at UM. With the looming budget cuts and finals week, photographer Joe Lesar looked at what students are doing to “stress less” with an event set up in the UC by Curry Health Center Wellness. Shortening Winter Break May Help Missoula Retailers
UM‘s current six week winter break takes students out of the community to spend time at home. Photographer Carrie Miller and reporter Dominique Giusti checked out how a plan to shorten the break by two weeks may help students who have to choose between family and a job.
State Higher Education Funding Decreased Along With Enrollment
UM students are reacting to recent budget cuts made by President Royce Engstrom in form of letters to the legislature. Students understand that enrollment is down, but funding for higher education has also decreased. Reporter Sarah Yovetich and Photographer Peter Riley got the specifics as students and faculty are still hard at work.
Solarize Missoula
The University of Montana is beginning the switch to solar power to cut down on greenhouse gases, and now a new community driven initiative is working to help Missoula residents install panels of their own Solarize Missoula is a new program that’s helping to educate the people of Missoula about using solar energy to power their homes instead of fossil fuels. ClimateSmart Director Amy Cilimburg says that lots of people who attend their workshops are interested in making the switch.

This week on UM News photographer Nick Christenson and Reporter Sean Robb phoned in to McMurdo station Antarctica to learn about sea spiders. One student is giving back to the local community by volunteering at the Humane Society of Western Montana. Also, Photographer Peter Riley explored how pictures with Santa are helping support new research through the UM Gerontology Society. UM Curry Health Center Medication Disposal Drop Box
The Curry Health Center on campus implemented a medication disposal drop box for the local community. It helps prevent old medications from getting into our water supply. Photographer Ryan Groh went to the pharmacy to get the story.
