UM Strives For Carbon Neutrality
The University of Montana continues to work on ways to reduce carbon dioxide because it is the leading cause of global warming. However, the drop in enrollment cut some funding for UM’s sustainability plans. This was one reason UM did not meet its goal of becoming fully carbon neutral by the year 2020. I talked with an ASUM senator and UM staff member who said that despite this, UM is still working toward that goal.
Montana State Arboretum
One way the University of Montana focuses on fighting climate change is through tree-planting on campus.
UM hosts the Montana State Arboretum, which has a champion tree that’s more than one-hundred feet tall. ASUM senator Emma Kiefer says UM has more trees than most universities, because it focuses on creating a sustainable environment.
Steam Roller Art
For the 18th Annual Steam Roller Print Project, students carved their designs on wood blocks. They coated their designs with ink and then printed them on bed sheets using a steam roller to run over them.
UM Senior, Alicia Solis, said the project challenges students to look at their art on a larger scale. She says she’s been in art programs at other schools, but they weren’t as active as UM’s.
