With Election Day around the corner the thousand s of absentee ballots highlight this week’s edition of UM News. Anchors Keeley Van Middendorp and Allison Molin also tell us about a Missoula program that prepares students to fill the expanding occupations in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. They also tell us how University of Montana students prepare to roll into the Day of the Dead Parade with their steamroller prints. SpectrUM Brings The Fun Back Into Science
According to the
U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, Montana is expected to see over 25,000 new jobs in the areas of math, science, technology and engineering by 2018.
SpectrUM Discovery Area aims to meet the growing occupations by showing children how fun a career in science can be. UM News reporter Keeley Van Middendorp took a visit to the museum to see SpectrUM’s creative approach to education.
Montanan’s Take Advantage Of Early Voting Period
Thousands of Montanans vote early during elections by mailing or dropping off absentee ballots. UM News reporter Allison Molin and photographer Cole Havens looked into the pros and cons of voting before election day.

After a recent explosion at University Villages housing, UM News reporter Mahkia Clark looked into what the University Police do to keep students living in those apartments safe and what to do in the case of an off-campus emergency.
Rolling into Day of the Dead
This Sunday marks Missoula’s 22nd annual Day of the Dead parade, part of a festival honoring life and death. The University of Montana does its part with the 14th Steamroller Print Project. Missoula was the first place in the country to combine the Day of the Dead with steamroller printing. UM News reporter Jenna Heberden learned more about the unique way Missoula celebrates this Spanish holiday.

With winter approaching it’s out with biking and into the mechanic’s shop for a tune up. But studies show fixing up your bike rather then your car for the cold months ahead could keep your figure slim and your wallet fat.
