UM Productions puts on a show
University of Montana students earn hands on experience in the production industry. Setting up shows like Mackelmore this past week is what UM Productions does numerous times a month. Whether backstage or in show event staff, students get to spend time in an atmosphere that gives them lifelong memories. UM News reporter Shane Gillette has the story.
Berkeley Pit water may be helpful
University of Montana research professors Don and Andrea Stierle have spent the better part of twenty years researching the Berkeley Pit Superfund site in Butte, Montana. In their research, they have discovered components that could possibly treat cancer, as well as a yeast that might hold the key to cleaning the acidic water. UM News reporter Eric Clements spoke to Andrea Stierle about their research.

Annual Forestry Club Pole Run
Each year the UM Forestry Club treks up to the Lubrecht Experimental Forest to gather lumber for the university’s annual Forester’s Ball. Students use the wood to build numerous structures and stands for the event. UM News Reporter Evan Rau and Photographer Sergio Gonzales tagged along for the early-morning expedition.
UM’s Haunted Buildings Tour
During family weekend, UM Ambassadors lead tours of UM’s most haunted buildings. Student actors dress up and tell scary stories to parents and guests. Reporter Lauren Robinson and Photographer Conor Ballantyne learned more about UM’s spookier side.
Moodle Accessibility
Moodle is a software e-learning platform used by students at the University of Montana to access online course content. This provides a unique set of challenges for students with disabilities. U-M News reporter Anna Cole and Photographer Mike Hubermann have the story.
“Rate My Landlord” website gets mixed reviews from students, landlords
The ASUM Off-Campus Renter Center launched its new “Rate My Landlord” website late last spring. So far, the site is largely unknown to students and property managers, but it is already causing some controversy. Reporter Kyle Schmauch and photographer Don Fisher talked to student renter Amanda Bryant, Real Estate Management Group Operations Manager Brittni Hertz, and Renter Center Director Katherine Brady. Bryant reported a bad private landlord on the site after breaking her lease and scrambling to find housing at the start of the school year. Hertz says the site has been mostly negative toward property managers, but says it could be beneficial for all parties if the public could see it and if it was better regulated. Brady says the site is just trying to inform students who are at a disadvantage with the rental market in Missoula.
UM Grizzly Football Boosts Local Economy
Montana Grizzly Football games bring thousands of people to Washington-Grizzly Stadium six times in this years regular season. UM News Reporter Nina Sveinson visits two local businesses that say they benefit from home game weekends.
STEM qualifies in top 50 Universities Nationally for Women Enrollment
The University of Montana ranks in the top 50 universities nationally for women’s enrollment. STEM consist of four programs, science, math, engineering, and technology. The University of Montana only has three of those four but still qualifies 43rd in the nation.
