UM Native American Group Fundraises for 50th Pow-Wow
Kyiyo Student Association is reaching out to the community to keep one of their oldest traditions alive. UM Reporter Mederios Whitworth-Babb tell us what events the group is planning to reach it’s fundraising goal of 10,000 dollars for the 50th Pow-Wow on April 21st and 22nd.
UM Club does Extra Work to “Can the Cats”
Every year the University of Montana and Montana State University compete against each other to see who can raise the most food leading up to the Brawl of the Wild game. Misssoula has only won twice in the past seventeen years. Reporter Mederios Whitworth-Babb tells us what one UM program is doing to make sure the Griz Can the Cats this year.
UM Student Groups Keep Surrounding Neighborhoods Clean
Every Sunday after home Griz Football games, the Sunday Sweepers clean up any trash in street surrounding UM that was left over from the day before. This program is run by ASUM’s Renter Center on Campus. It’s goal is to bridge the divide between students and the community by picking up garbage and asking residents if they have encountered any issues like noise complaints or vandalism. Reporter Mederios Whitworth-Babb went to campus to find out how ASUM is making sure Missoula’s streets are clean and neighbors are happy.

This week on UM News, the Missoula community came to the rescue of the UM Marching Band’s members who were told they couldn’t travel to Bozeman for this year’s the Brawl of the Wild game, Circle K is shifting its fundraising focus locally instead of nationally, and The Rocky Mountain Ballet Theater kicked off its fundraiser for its annual Ballet Beyond Borders event coming in January. This show was produced by Mederios Whitworth-Babb, directed by Tiffany Folkes and anchored by Meghan Bourassa and Matthew Skillman.
UM Encourages Kids to Pick Up a Book With First Read With the Griz Program
UM Athletics Department is trying to get students K-8 to start reading more often by giving them an incentive. October was the first month for the Read With the Griz program. Kids will compete against other students and class to see who can read the most books. Students can participate in this program either individually or as a class. UM awards prizes each month to students who have read at least seven books. Classes that read the most books each month will also get a special class appearance from UM’s mascot Monte. UM will also award grand prizes at the end of the year. Reporter Mederios Whitworth-Babb went to Franklin Elementary to see how the first month of the reading program went for one 3rd grade class.
The Missoula Food Bank Reaches Out to Community After Increase in Demand
The Missoula Food Bank is relying on food donations and the entire Missoula community due to an increase in demand over the past two years. UM has extended a helping hand through class fundraisers, student volunteers and food drives like Can the Bobcats. Reporter Mederios Whitworth-Babb finds out how the community is banding together to make sure you and your neighbor have food on your table.
Missoula Focuses on Carbon Emitted from Transportation
A recent report from Climate Smart Missoula, says transportation emits the largest portion of carbon for Missoula. The community is focusing on this 37% for the month of October. UM has reduced its emission of fossil fuels by purchasing two electric buses over the past two years. The University continues to work towards sustainability through addressing transportation along with reducing its energy consumption and improving its recycling program. Missoulians Welcome New International Students
Each Semester UM’s International Students and Scholars Department pair up with the Missoula International Friendship Program to spread cultural awareness throughout the community. UM Reporter Mederios Whitworth-Babb went to the program’s annual meet and greet to find out what it means to be a community friend. Citizens who would like to become a community friend can apply online.
