Neighborhood Ambassadors Build Community in University District
One UM student group promotes quality of life in the University District. The Neighborhood Ambassador Program pays a monthly visit to each house. They follow up on complaints and help build relationships between student renters and permanent homeowners. Neighborhood Ambassador Bryce Rowe says he enjoys reaching out to the community. The program also communicates through their newsletter, blog, and Facebook page.
ASUM Renter Center Free and Open to All
The ASUM Off-Campus Renter Center advises students and non-students on problems ranging from household maintenance to handling security deposits. Director Mary O’Malley says she refers some clients to Legal Services…but enjoys providing free tips regarding rental disputes. O’Malley says she hopes more students and non-students find out about the Renter Center before they have a serious problem.

National Anthem Protest Discussion Reaches UM Campus
One NFL quarterback’s racial inequality protest is sparking discussion at UM. UM News reporter Kempson Cross and photographer Grant Herzog found out what the campus has to say about Colin Kaepernick‘s protest during the national anthem. The protest movement now touches multiple sports across the United States with mixed reaction.
Fall Fashion In Full Swing
This week reporter Tasha Cain and photographer Chelsea Reichard set out to see how people are dressing for the changing Montana weather. They concluded that layering is the key to the autumn weather changes. Some layering strategies were common, like a wool base layer. There are other trends that are suprising the trendiest of people.
Uber Rolls Into Montana
Uber is a ride sharing app for your smartphone. It matches drivers with riders in their area to provide a quick trip. There is currently no proof that Uber is reducing the number of D-U-I’s in the county since it is so new, however the rate has decreased in the past year.
UM Hosts Supply Drive for Standing Rock Indian Reservation
UM students and faculty are reaching out to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota. UM hosted a clothing and supply drive in the University Center Game Room. Standing Rock residents are protesting plans for the Dakota Access oil pipeline to bridge the Missouri River. UC Game Room Program Adviser Joseph Grady says the drive supports unarmed people protecting their homeland and drinking water from potential danger. Grady says they collected nearly 200 potatoes, several cases of water, toys for children, and winter supplies including gloves and firewood.
U-M Debuts Raise Me Scholarships
The University of Montana is facing a fifth year enrollment drop. Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs, Thomas Crady, is combating the issue by debuting a micro-scholarship program aimed to putting money in perspective student’s pockets. The Raise Me Scholarships reward high school students for things such as perfect attendance, making the honor roll, and many other academic achievements. The money earned must be used to attend U-M.
