Neighborhood Ambassadors Build Community in University District
One UM student group promotes quality of life in the University District. The Neighborhood Ambassador Program pays a monthly visit to each house. They follow up on complaints and help build relationships between student renters and permanent homeowners. Neighborhood Ambassador Bryce Rowe says he enjoys reaching out to the community. The program also communicates through their newsletter, blog, and Facebook page.
ASUM Renter Center Free and Open to All
The ASUM Off-Campus Renter Center advises students and non-students on problems ranging from household maintenance to handling security deposits. Director Mary O’Malley says she refers some clients to Legal Services…but enjoys providing free tips regarding rental disputes. O’Malley says she hopes more students and non-students find out about the Renter Center before they have a serious problem.

UM Professor Brings New Perspective to Montana Public Radio
One UM professor became the first political scientist to co-host alongside two journalists on a long-running program. UM News reporter Kempson Cross and photographer Ryan McKinley found out how Montana Public Radio elected the new lineup. rter Tasha Cain and photographer Chelsea Reichard set out to see how people are dressing for the changing Montana weather. They concluded that layering is the key to the autumn weather changes. Some layering strategies were common, like a wool base layer. There are other trends that are suprising the trendiest of people.
UM Hosts Supply Drive for Standing Rock Indian Reservation
UM students and faculty are reaching out to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota. UM hosted a clothing and supply drive in the University Center Game Room. Standing Rock residents are protesting plans for the Dakota Access oil pipeline to bridge the Missouri River. UC Game Room Program Adviser Joseph Grady says the drive supports unarmed people protecting their homeland and drinking water from potential danger. Grady says they collected nearly 200 potatoes, several cases of water, toys for children, and winter supplies including gloves and firewood.
